York Community Stadium

Working on behalf of developers Wrenbridge Sport and charitable social enterprise GLL, HOW Planning has secured planning permission for a sport-led mixed-use development comprising an 8,000 capacity community stadium, leisure centre, multi-screen cinema, and supporting retail uses on the site of the existing Huntington Stadium at Monks Cross, York.

Following the successful completion and opening of the Community Stadium’s neighbouring enabling retail development (Vangarde Shopping Park) – one of York’s biggest ever developments – where HOW Planning secured both outline planning and reserved matters consent for 320,000sqft retail floorspace to be occupied by John Lewis, Marks and Spencer and Next, the Manchester based specialists provided further planning and EIA advice to deliver the Community Stadium and a host of other complementary uses.

Upon completion it is envisaged that the 8,000 capacity community stadium will become the home for professional football and rugby league in York, providing a fan zone, hospitality and conference facilities as well as a community hub where five partner charitable and community organisations will be based. The Leisure centre will include a 25m six-lane swimming pool, a teaching pool and a fun pool as well as a sports hall, gym, dance studio and an adventure climbing centre.

The sport facilities will be complemented by 60,000sqft of retail floorspace, a state-of-the-art 12-screen cinema and two restaurants; ensuring that this scheme will become a successful year-round visitor attraction and not just a match day destination. These commercial uses will also provide an array of full and part time job opportunities.
