HOW Planning has secured planning permission for a 2.24ha mixed-use development including a marina in Northwich, Cheshire on behalf of joint applicants H20 Urban, British Waterways, Waitrose Stores and McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles.
Cheshire West and Chester Council gave the go-ahead for the Northwich Marina development, which occupies a prominent ‘gateway’ location on the southern route into Northwich Town Centre. On completion the scheme will include a new boating marina, a 2,542 sqm Waitrose foodstore, 58 unit Extra Care facility, flexible use waterside unit, as well as car parking and new areas of waterside public realm and landscaping. The scheme will create in the order of 230 new jobs.
The site’s potential for comprehensive mixed-use redevelopment has been long acknowledged in the Council’s ‘Northwich Vision’ planning policies and permission for the scheme will see an important site being brought forward for development; the first piece in the jigsaw of the town centre’s wider redevelopment.
The leisure marina element of the scheme will occupy a 50m stretch of the Weaver Navigation and will include a bespoke modern pontoon system to accommodate high quality moorings. Adjacent to this on the bank of the river will be a new publically accessible, comprehensively landscaped walkway, opening up this stretch of the Weaver to the general public for the first time.
Plans also include the erection of a waterside flexible use unit which will likely be occupied by a restaurant or other leisure use.
